At home with Louise Booyens

With a degree in Heritage Interior Design and a passion for historic buildings, Louise specialises in designs for period homes. She tells us how she uses vintage in her projects.

How would you describe your interiors style?

I don’t focus on any specific styles, but rather on my clients’ individual personalities. I design rooms to be comfortable and relaxing; how the space makes you feel is so important. For me, it’s all about marrying period details with pattern, colour and up-to-date touches while always being sympathetic to the building’s history. My philosophy is that your home should reflect both who you are and the things you love.

How do you use vintage in your projects?

Vintage and antique pieces can be used to great effect to ensure that the end result doesn’t seem too contrived. They also help to create the feeling that the room has evolved over a period of time. When you add a piece of brown furniture to a room full of colour and pattern, it adds character and a sense of balance to the scheme.

What do you love most about sourcing vintage?

The excitement of finding the perfect piece, whether it’s a chair, a lamp or a piece of fabric. An auction or antique market is the perfect place to find something unique and personal that means something special to you and that will help you tell your story.

What does home mean to you?

Home is where I can truly relax and be comfortable. And of course, home is where the dogs are!
