At home with Jessie Cutts

At home with Jessie Cutts

Textile artist Jessie is restoring her Georgian home in Kent, which boasts an abundance of character and original features. She tells us about her passion for buying vintage.

How would you describe your interiors style?

I always find this such a hard question to answer because I really don't ever want to feel limited by a style. I'll choose anything from any era or type so long as I like it. I guess what I am drawn to is art, craft, history, stories and certain colours.

How do you use vintage in your home?

There's almost nothing that isn't vintage or second hand, so, everywhere, in every room. Whenever we need to buy anything, we try and get it second hand first. I've grown up doing that, so just feels like a really normal thing to do.

What do you love most about buying vintage?

I really love the unexpected nature of it and discovering a new corner of history or story with the things we find, as well as the imperfections that old things almost always come along with. You never quite know what will turn up and it certainly takes patience, but finding the perfect thing is very satisfying. I especially love to give something unloved a new lease of life.

What does home mean to you?

Home is a place that feels comfortable, functions for our life and looks beautiful, and for me, they go all hand in hand. That said, living in an ongoing renovation you have to let go of everything being like that! I even try and make an effort in spaces that I know will change. But I really do take pleasure in the way our house looks and am certain that it has an impact on everyone in it.
