At home with Holly Vaughan

Interior designer Holly is the founder of Vaughan Design & Development, an all-in-one design and build company. She tells us why she favours sourcing vintage for her projects.

How would you describe your interiors style?

I find it almost impossible to describe! I know that sounds a bit crazy as its’ my job, but I’d say I love to bring the most out of a space with considered design and some unexpected, playful touches. I like a room to be warm and inviting, and also intriguing. My style is constantly evolving with different projects, clients and inspiration, so although I think there is a recognisable element to my designs I couldn’t tell you what that is.

How do you use vintage in your projects?

I like to use as much vintage as I can in projects, with furniture, textiles, lighting and accessories. Sometimes it can be hard to get clients’ approval when vintage pieces are one-offs and can easily be sold at any time, but it’s definitely worth the extra effort as the end result is so much better.

What do you love most about sourcing vintage?

I just love the fact that vintage pieces are so unique, and it’s thrilling to find that special piece that fits perfectly into the puzzle of building a space. I much prefer surfaces with texture and interest as they just look and feel so much more satisfying. I do also think the hunt brings a lot of joy. I adore going to markets and anywhere I can source knick-knacks.

What does home mean to you?

Home really is where the heart is and it means everything to me and my family. Our surroundings affect our mood so much, I can’t imagine not feeling some joy and inspiration from every room (even when they’re completely covered in toys and mess).
