At home with Clare Marie

At home with Clare Marie

We talk antiques with Clare who decided to pursue a career as an interior designer after renovating her family home in South East London.

How would you describe your interior style?

I like to think my style has a classic timelessness to it. I’m drawn to furniture which holds a story, whether that be how I came upon discovering the item, its provenance or most rewardingly both. Craftmanship, uniqueness and longevity of a piece is important to me which is one of the reasons I love antique furniture. Wherever possible I would much rather invest once in an item and enjoy it forever.

How do you use antiques in your projects?

I love mixing old and new pieces in a project as this enables you to create a room that has interest and depth, and ultimately a design which is unique to you. I believe that whatever your style, be it modern or minimalist an antique piece or two will elevate the scheme. It’s all about placement, the patina and texture of the items and the shapes.

What do you love most about sourcing antiques?

Sourcing antiques has always been a passion of mine. It’s eco-friendly and a greener way of shopping, as well as being a great way to rediscover and breathe new life into furniture. Not only that, it’s also an opportunity to express your individuality. Most pieces are one of a kind, and no one else will have them - what’s not to love?

What does home mean to you?

I am such a home body and love my creature comforts. Home to me is a place where I can truly relax in my surroundings, and I believe my love for interiors stemmed from this. Our surroundings change the way we feel and where better to start than with your own home. When you collect objects that you truly love, that’s a great place to start in creating a home.
